Are you looking for practical experience in the field of human rights? Stichting URGENT / the URGENT Foundation is looking for a spring intern to work on projects combining human rights, journalism, and project management from March to June 2023

Stichting URGENT  is looking for a passionate intern to contribute to groundbreaking projects at the intersection of human rights, activism, and project management.

From mid-March to mid-June, you'll have the chance to immerse yourself in our human rights initiatives at the Shelter City Amsterdam Program. Shelter City is a Justice and Peace Netherlands initiative hosted by Stichting URGENT in partnership with the Amsterdam City Council. It is a global movement of cities, organisations and people who stand side by side with human rights defenders at risk. During their stay, they are offered tailor-made support, skill development training, networking and advocacy opportunities, and a space to engage with relevant allies to reinforce their local actions for change whilst focusing on their health and personal development.

As part of this program, you'll play a pivotal role in providing temporary refuge and support for human rights defenders, allowing them to recharge while engaging with allies at the national and international level, developing their skills, and expanding their networks and advocacy work in a safe haven that prioritises their well-being.

Additionally, you'll be involved in various activities that promote engagement with Human Rights activism in diverse contexts:

  • WorldTalks: Dive into the stories of human rights defenders through interviews that shed light on their motivations, challenges and aspirations. As an intern, you'll have the opportunity to conduct interviews, produce documentaries, curate themed dossiers, launch social media campaigns, or organise Human Rights-related events.

  • The Activist Bar: Join us in organising live events in Amsterdam like the Activist Bar, where attendees engage in one-on-one discussions with human rights defenders. The event includes talks, discussion panels and art performances.

If you're intrigued by this internship opportunity, here's what you can expect:

  • Work from our office at the Weteringschans, surrounded by a supportive team in an informal atmosphere.

  • Enjoy a competitive internship compensation of €550 full-time or €275 part-time, tailored to your availability and workload.

  • In addition to acquiring valuable job experience, you'll have the opportunity to spearhead your own Human Rights-related project. We offer comprehensive support for any academic research you wish to undertake, including thesis projects and ECTs. Moreover, this internship offers many networking opportunities with a wide array of organisations, ranging from local grassroots initiatives to international entities.

Additional Candidate Requirements:

  • To thrive in this role, we're looking for individuals who are:

  • Driven by a passion for human rights and eager to support activists during their time in Amsterdam.

  • Flexible, proactive, and capable of working independently.

  • Solution-oriented with strong communication and organisational skills.

  • Interested in Latin America and Human Rights

  • Fluent in English and Spanish (preferred).

If you're ready to make a meaningful impact in the field of human rights and gain invaluable hands-on experience, we want to hear from you! Apply now and join us in making a difference.
